Stencils

Are you looking for a quick and easy way to add a classy and attractive touch to your home? Or are you are looking for a convenient and fun way to create beautiful crafts? No matter what your home project is, you should consider the creative possibilities that can be opened up by using stencils.

What are Stencils?

A stencil is simply a template used to draw or paint a repeating pattern. To create a stencil, you start with a sheet – usually heavy construction paper or plastic – and remove material to leave an image. In a sense, a stencil is a physical negative. To transfer the image from the stencil to another object, just place the stencil of the chosen object and apply paint or equivalent material over the entire stencil. When you remove the stencil, you will be left with an image where the paint passed through the stencil onto the destination object. The stencil can then be used again and again to create the exact same image.

What are Some of the Typical Uses of Stencils?

The possibilities for using stencils around the home are unlimited – from do it yourself home improvements and decorating to arts and crafts, the only limit to the use of stencils is your imagination.

Around the house, the most common use of stencils is for borders. Stencils can be used to create an attractive pattern around baseboards or ceilings, or to frame windows. Creating a border around your room can help better define your room’s proportions and add a touch of refinement to your decorations. For a more artistic approach, you can actually use stencils to create small to large repeating patterns on your wall. In this way, stencils can be used as a replacement or alternative to wallpaper. Imagine how beautiful your living room would look if it had a large repeating oriental flower pattern on your wall.

Smaller stencils can also be used with your crafts. Use holiday themed stencils to create your own personalized greeting cards. Children can also have a lot of fun with stencils, as it allows them to create clear crafts with little effort. Indeed, that is one of the great things about stencils – they are so easy to use, even a child can use them with minimal effort.

Some Tips and Tricks to Using Stencils

While stencils are very easy to use, there are some tips you can employ to make sure you are using your stencils as well as possible.

When placing a stencil on the way, the usual method to make it stick is to use masking tape. For a more secure attachment that will not get in the way of your painting or damage the underlying material, use adhesive repositioning spray. A light spraying will firmly secure your stencil without leaving any traces behind once you remove your stencil. However, if you are going to use both side of the stencil, be sure to wash of the adhesive reposition spray with baby oil or sudsy water so you are not painting onto glue.

If you are new to stenciling, it is a good idea to do a test run on a piece of paper before painting your wall. This will give you a better feel for how much pressure to use, and how much paint to use (not too much). While it will delay the start of your project, it will save time in the long run. And most of all, remember to have fun!
